Newly discovered work by Francisco Tárrega

Critical Edition by Jesús Saiz Huedo.

La Fundación Lázaro Galdiano F.S.P. (en adelante FLG), y la Asociación Cultural More Hispano (en adelante ACMH), firmaron un Convenio de Colaboración para llevar a cabo de manera conjunta el proyecto Los manuscritos de guitarra del Fondo «Manuela Vázquez-Barros» de la Biblioteca Lázaro Galdiano, un proyecto cultural de interés mutuo. En dicho proyecto se contempla la difusión del fondo, mediante la grabación de la música y la publicación de un libro en el que se incluyan los trabajos previos y las partituras. El equipo de investigación creado desde la ACMH ha considerado, con la conformidad de la FLG, que la obra de este fondo titulada "Serenata Española", y atribuida a Francisco Tárrega, tiene la suficiente relevancia como para dedicarle una publicación singular con independencia de que se incluya igualmente cuando se publique la investigación realizada completa.

Por todo ello, el pasado 11 de agosto de 2018 salió de imprenta el libro Francisco Tárrega. Serenata Española, una nueva obra para guitarra de Francisco Tárrega, desconocida hasta la fecha.

Desde la Asociación Cultural More Hispano, encargada de los aspectos musicales del proyecto, la edición crítica ha sido realizada por el guitarrista y director del proyecto Jesús Saiz Huedo. La investigación en su conjunto cuenta con la colaboración de algunos musicólogos e investigadores con importantes trayectorias profesionales y numerosas publicaciones en su haber, como Juan Antonio Yeves Andrés, Guillermo Castro Buendía, Ignacio Ramos Altamira y Luis Briso de Montiano.

La Serenata Española forma parte del Fondo de manuscritos musicales «Manuela Vázquez-Barros» de la Biblioteca Lázaro Galdiano, y está firmada en Sevilla en marzo de 1902 por Manuela Vázquez-Barros Florido (1885-1919), hija de la esposa de José Lázaro Galdiano, Paula Florido. Este manuscrito es la única fuente conocida hasta la fecha de esta música.

En palabras de Jesús Saiz Huedo "Se trata de una composición muy elaborada que presenta un atractivo desarrollo melódico y armónico y una gran variedad de texturas: melodía acompañada, polifonía, sucesión de acordes, arpegios, progresiones, diseños monódicos y contrapuntísticos. [...] Estamos sin duda ante una magnífica obra de concierto que no tardará mucho en ser incorporada y ocupar un lugar importante en el repertorio histórico de la guitarra clásica española."

The Lázaro Galdiano Foundation and the More Hispano Cultural Association signed a collaboration agreement to carry out a research project under the title The guitar manuscripts in the «Manuela Vázquez-Barros» Music Manuscripts Collection from the Lázaro Galdiano Library (Madrid). Through this project the music in the collection will be recorded, played in concerts and published in a book which will include the results of the investigation, along with the critical edition and the facsimiles of all the pieces.

The research team in charge of the project has considered that the piece "Serenata Española", attributed to Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909), is especially important and deserves its own edition. Notwithstanding that it will be included in the final book as well, a previous volume with the critical edition of the "Serenata Española", along with a thorough preliminary study and facsimile images of the manuscript, has been published in August, 2018.

The edition has been carried out by the research project director, guitarist Jesús Saiz Huedo. Along with him, some researchers and musicologists with related publications and important expertise in this matter such as Juan Antonio Yeves Andrés, Guillermo Castro Buendía, Ignacio Ramos Altamira y Luis Briso de Montiano are collaborating.

The manuscript belongs to the the «Manuela Vázquez-Barros» Music Manuscripts Collection from the Lázaro Galdiano Library. It was signed in Seville in March, 1902, by Manuela Vázquez-Barros Florido (1885-1919), daughter of José Lázaro Galdiano's wife, Paula Florido.

As we can infer from the preliminary notes to this edition, this manuscript seems to be the only existent source for this music. As the editor explains "This is a large scope piece which presents a wide variety of textural elements and a number of witty and well-designed passages showing accompanied melody, polyphony, chord progressions, arpeggios, sequentias, monodic and counterpoint designs. [...] It is a superb concert piece and will undoubtedly be a distinctive addition to the historic guitar repertoire".
